Pop those headphones in, or not, and take a listen.
Great podcast about various mental health concerns within our community. Hosted by Vince “The Voice” Bailey and Makeba Reed-Johnson. You’ll definitely notice the voice, lol. Seriously though, they have discussed many challenges that members of our community have experienced but may not have acknowledged. They pack a lot of info and guidance into their 30ish minute episodes. You can scroll through and see the topics. I’ve put a few episodes that stood out below.
This is an excellent podcast from a group of melanated brothas who practice social work. Their brotherhood truly shines through on each episode. They’re so tapped into the culture and do an excellent job discussing mental health in relatable ways, using their experiences as examples or explanations. It is certainly worth the subscription, but I’ve highlighted a few episodes below that I found helpful. Check it out.
Sound Mind Live uses music to help end the stigma surrounding mental health. They host events and programs to raise awareness and knowledge, provide opportunities for musicians living with mental health challenges to share their stories, and have music-related resources available. They’ve compiled two great playlists, one to help improve mood and the other to reduce stress. You can find out more about Sound Mind Live via their website and their Facebook page.
This is an incredible series from the New York Times and Nikole Hannah-Jones. A true must listen. Here, I’m highlighting the first episode: The Fight for a True Democracy. This episode showcases how Black Americans have always fought to make this nation live up to its aspirations. Parts of this episode, like the series, are painful and infuriating, but ultimately I learned a lot, felt validated, and even empowered. You can find more information about the 1619 podcast here.
